Barred Owls
Sightings and activity increases in the winter. Owls set up nesting territories with calls in the late fall. After the leaves fall from the trees their roosting sites become visible. I spotted three Barred Owls on the Boston Common and the Public Garden one year plus another one hidden deep in the Faneuil Hall holiday tree! Delighted and astonished to watch a Barred Owl dive into the Boston Public Garden Swan Pond to catch a frog!

Best time to locate a Barred Owl is at sunset when they call
"Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all." eight note hoots and slur.

Osprey in the Emerald Necklace Parks

Osprey are usually seen in the Emerald Necklace and Boston during migration. Osprey have been nesting at Moswetuset Park in Quincy just off of Quincy Shore Drive and Squantum Streets the past few years. They are often seen fishing the Neponset River. I suspect the Osprey I photographed at Scarboro Pond (Franklin Park) and Jamaica Pond the past few summers are from this same nesting site. Always a wonder to watch them hover before the dive for a fish...
